The best surf beach around here is a small fishing village on the way to Ghana. It's about an hour away and it's a very rustic place. I really like it. The kids and I along with Fabrice aka Fabio, the local surf hero, went down there and spent the day there. We had a blast. It really feels like you're in Ghana except people speak French but speak local languages common to Ghana. The beach is flat and perfect for surfing as well as games on the sand. The kids loved boogy-boarding even Anna.

Because of the new hoop and many missed easy shots the kids around here have been exposed to parts of the English language that they did not know existed. They have also listened to some of the best rock-n-roll around. AC/DC seems to be a huge hit. When I was in Bassam living in the quartier there was an old basketball hoop that saw some great games but eventually it fell down. I said I would build a new one and this time I did that. The new hoop and some cement on the ground has offered a huge place for everyone to play to and gather. The games have been epic and now people are coming from other parts of Bassam to play. The 'hood is getting a reputation. It's really a blast playing out there and the kids love playing and watching. They are really in to basketball. Football is still king but man they love the hoops too. Part of the work of the orphanage where we donated money from our research (see below) is to protect albino children. The day we went they were having a celebration and donating eye glasses to these children. In Dakar there are small Arabic schools packed with kids learning the language. This particular one I went into was really crowded and the kids were very excited to see me. The teacher was nice but he did have a whip and the kids were following his orders. Tea is a big deal in Senegal and I made friends with some local guys who made me tea. It was a great experience and the tea was fantastic. (It's a long process.) |
